MESSAGE FROM THE WSC PRESIDENT
It is now just over a year since the new WSC premises opened for business. During that time we have hosted numerous wedding receptions, birthday and anniversary parties, celebrations and festival events as well as an extensive weekly class timetable. Universally, users have expressed their delight in the facilities and the personal support from staff to make their event go with a swing. We have also put on some free WSC party nights which have been well-attended and enjoyed by members and non-members alike.
A few months ago we undertook a survey to find out more about what sort of events members wanted and the results of that confirmed that we are on the right lines. We are looking at how we can do even more over the course of the next year.
At the special meeting prior to the AGM last year, the committee obtained agreement to make some changes to the Club rules to better reflect the reality of how it needs to be managed effectively in the 21st century. Having looked at this in some detail, this is likely to involve more work than initially envisaged and, quite simply, we have been focusing our attention on getting the Club up and running, as well as dealing with a change of manager and revised staffing structure. Nonetheless, the committee recognises some changes need to be made to the procedures for the election of officers and committee and have therefore enacted a by-law, as permitted under the rules. A copy of the by-law is attached for reference.
This by-law includes a process to allow changes to terms of office and rotation of committee members to provide business continuity. I shall therefore be proposing that the current committee continue for the time being and begin the rotation process from 2018.
There is one exception. The Treasurer, Ian Tonks, is standing down from the committee and we therefore welcome nominations from suitably qualified members of good standing and conduct for this key role. An outline of the role is attached. Nominations must be received by no later than 10 June 2017.
The AGM will begin at 7pm on 24 June and will be followed by another free WSC party night, featuring Clear Waters Deep, playing upbeat and soulful music of rearranged covers from Billie Holiday to Daft Punk.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting and for the festivities afterwards.
Sir Peter Hendy CBE
