Watch Closely Observed Trains and hear Ken Loach, celebrated director of Kes and The Wind That Shakes The Barley talk about one of his favourite films.

This keystone movie of the Czech New Wave charmed and excited critics and audiences when it reached the West in 1967, going on to win the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 1968. Amongst those it impressed and influenced was the young Ken Loach, moving on from television to work on his first feature films (Poor Cow, Kes) just as Menzel’s debut was released in the UK.

Milos is a rookie deputy station-master at a rural stop during the latter stages of WW2. He struggles with his burgeoning sexuality and with whether, and how, he should engage in resistance against the occupying Nazi forces. The resolution of both issues dovetails neatly in Menzel’s sprightly comedic satire, an adaptation of the novel by Bohumil Hrabal.
