SATURDAY 20TH JUNE TRANSMISSION - INDIE DISCO
Doors Open - 5:30pm
Film Starts - 6:30pm
Vojtech Jasný, Czechoslovakia, 1963, 105m, PG, sub-titles
In this playfully surreal comedic satire, the moral failings of a small Czech town are colourfully exposed by a psychic, sunglasses-wearing cat who arrives with a travelling show, accompanied by a magician and the alluring all-in-red Diana. The performers reveal unpalatable truths by magically colour-coding miscreants. Liars turn purple, thieves grey, cheats yellow but those capable of true love, like Robert the schoolteacher, turn a Diana shade of red. The fanciful events are related by Oliva, the town sage, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the magician.
One of the harbingers of the 1960s explosion of cinematic creativity known as the ‘Czech New Wave’, the film is a delightful riot of visual ideas. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes in 1963, it also won plaudits for its amazing cinematography and beguiling music. Nonetheless, Jasný was called in for interrogation by the secret police and the film was banned following the 1968 suppression of the Prague Spring uprising, only to re-emerge restored and triumphant at Cannes in 2021.

Michael Powell / Emeric Pressburger, UK, 1947, 101m, U
Presented in partnership with the Bath and District Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society.
A troupe of British nuns are invited by an Indian Raja to establish a school and hospital in the unlikely setting of his Himalayan mountain-top former harem. Their struggle to prevail against the isolation, the alien culture and ‘impure’ thoughts stimulated by the erotic murals they find on the walls are cynically observed by the ruler’s agent Mr Dean, to whom a number of the nuns, especially the unhinged Sister Ruth, are magnetically attracted.
Boasting a who’s-who cast of post-war British acting talent (Deborah Kerr, Jean Simmons, Kathleen Byron, David Farrar) and Oscar-winning production design and cinematography, this daring psycho-drama throbs with repressed emotion which threatens to detonate across the screen.

Eric Gravel, France, 2021, 88m, 12A, sub-titles
‘Call My Agent’ star Laure Calamy delivers a sensational performance in this powerhouse narrative of the struggles of single mother Julie, feverishly juggling her exhausting job as a Paris hotel head chambermaid and the needs of her children against the backdrop of a transport strike and her search to find more rewarding employment. She ends up spinning far too many plates…
Full Time combines a totally plausible realism, to which anyone struggling with their work-life balance can relate, with the breakneck pace of a thriller or action film. The outstanding direction and award-winning editing elicit breathless excitement from everyday activities - think ‘Ken Loach on steroids’! As the consensus view on Rotten Tomatoes reads: "Led by Laure Calamy’s performance, Full Time serves as a sobering reminder that just staying financially afloat can sometimes feel like a white-knuckle thriller."

Pre-screening supper available - Charcuterie & Olive Platter or Vegetarian Spanish Tortilla and Tomato Platter
SUNDAY 14TH JUNE OFF THE WALL FILMS PRESENTS - FULL TIME (À plein temps)
Doors Open - 5:30pm

Margy Kinmonth, UK, 2022, 87m, PG
A SECOND SCREENING DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND!
One of Britain’s greatest landscape artists, Eric Ravilious was killed in a plane crash while on commission as Official War Artist in Iceland in 1942. His life is as compelling and enigmatic as his art, set against the dramatic wartime locations that inspired him. This first full length feature documentary about Ravilious brings to life a unique and still grossly undervalued British artist caught in the crossfire of war 80 years ago. His legacy largely sank without trace, until a cache of his paintings were discovered some 40 years after his death under fellow artist Edward Bawden’s bed.
We're also delighted that friend of director Margy Kinmonth, Gordon Cooke, who has had a career-long association with the work of Ravilious, will take part in a post-screening Q+A. Gordon sold many works by Eric Ravilious during his 40 years as an art dealer and knows the artist's family. He also founded The London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1985 and is a director of The Fine Art Society. He will be happy to answer audience questions during the Q+A session.
