JULY
THROUGHOUT JULY LIFE DRAWING SHOWCASE & ARTIST EXHIBITION
.png)
Throughout July we are showcasing a varied and eclectic mix of life drawing studies and artworks from artists who attend Bath Drawing's weekly classes in Bath.
The exhibition can be seen every Friday evening in our ground floor Waterside Bar between 5pm - 10:30pm and at other times when we have public events
‘For the artist, drawing is discovery’ is how renowned art critic John Berger begins his essay, ‘The Basis of all Painting and Sculpture is Drawing’.
This exhibition features the work of print makers, painters, architects and life models whose commonality in their practice is the foundation of a life drawing class – to observe, discover and create form.

Strangers on a Train
From 7:30pm
Alfred Hitchcock, USA, 1951, 101m, PG
With: Farley Granger, Robert Walker, Ruth Roman

More tennis! Celebrity tennis star Guy Haines wants rid of his unfaithful wife Miriam so he can marry the elegant and beautiful senator’s daughter Anne Morton. He is recognised on a train by pushy Bruno Anthony, who hates his domineering father and describes his plan for the perfect murder – an arrangement which will involve each of these strangers in a killing – “criss-cross!” - for which there will be no obvious motive and therefore no suspicion from the police. Flustered by Bruno’s enthusiasm for the proposal, Guy plays along just to humour him and eventually manages to get away, leaving behind his cigarette lighter. However, Bruno interprets Guy’s manner as acquiescence to the plan and sets his side of the bargain into motion.
Full of typical Hitchcock flourishes, this densely-plotted, brilliantly acted and highly atmospheric adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s first novel includes the tense and celebrated tennis match sequence. Strangers on a Train is commonly regarded as one of Hitchcock’s most thrilling and ingenious films and will be a great way to top off both the Wimbledon Men’s Final and WSC’s 10th Anniversary celebrations!

A dilapidated Tuscan smallholding is home to Wolfgang, Angelica and their four daughters. The eldest girl Gelsomina is de facto head of the family, partly because of her father’s wayward behaviour but mostly because of her great understanding of the apiary which provides their main source of income. Their tight-knit, loving and eccentric way of life is threatened by new health standards which their apiary will not meet. When Gelsomina stumbles across a location shoot for ‘Village Wonders’, a tacky tv show which showcases quaint rural practices, she is transfixed by the glamourous presenter Milly and perceives a way out of the family predicament. But can she convince Wolfgang?

Having gained experience and confidence in Rome, Clelia, from a poor family, returns to her native Turin to set up a fashion salon. On her first night, a woman in the neighbouring hotel room, Rosetta, nearly dies after overdosing on pills. Sympathising, Clelia takes Rosetta under her wing and meets three of her girl friends, Momina, Nene and Mariella. All are rich and materially successful, although lead complicated love lives. With the cynical Momina attempting to orchestrate manoeuvres, the women try to make sense of the tangled web of emotions and motivations afforded by modern, affluent, post-industrial, urbanite living.
